Purple Lightning Class

Lightning class is a lively class of 10 Key Stage 2 pupils, aged between 6-11 years. Our pupils have a range of complex medical needs including:

  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Global Developmental Delay
  • Hypertonia
  • Downs Syndrome
  • Chromosome Duplications
  • Severe Epilepsy & Diabetes

We have a mixture of mobile and non-mobile pupils who are at varying stages with regard to their language development and cognitive ability. As a result, our pupils have a wide range of communication, sensory, physical and learning needs.

In Lightning class, we follow the Working Towards Independence (WTI) Pathway. Language development & communication is threaded through all our lessons with the use of Makaton and symbols to support the development of spoken language or the use of a communication device. Pupils engage in semi-formal lessons where they are able to access daily phonics, reading, sentence building, Maths as well as investigative Science. We also complete activities that meet the physical and sensory needs of our pupils including Hydrotherapy and Rebound as well as Art and Music.

There is also a strong emphasis on ‘Preparation for Adulthood’, which involves pupils developing self-care and life skills through activities such as cooking sessions & local area visits. The intention is to promote independence and provide skills that will prepare them for life beyond Penny Field School.
